Biography

Born in 1994 in West Virginia, US, Trey Abdella lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. The artist received his MFA from the New York Academy of Art and a BFA from the School of Vsual Arts. Abdella’s captivating paintings depict assemblages of spaces inhabited by a broad range of characters found in movies, cartoons and also in everyday life. Widely known for his ironic, often tragic approach to daily events, Abdella brings into surface through his practice personal yet relatable conception of Americana. Abdella’s works, playing with iconographic elements of American life style, shine a light on the dark side of his own homeland culture. Mixing his personal remembrances with commonplace experiences of every American Millennial, the artist produces an overwhelming X-ray of the country, and focuses his attention in underlining the anxiety that is embedded in its culture.

Trey Abdella – In The Neighborhood

Studio Visit

From his studio in New York, Trey Abdella talks about his second solo exhibition at T293. 'In The Neighborhood' is conceived by the artist as a journey through his childhood and coming of age experiences. The works portray mundane but nonetheless memorable situations that Abdella has lived while growing up in the suburbs of West Virginia. Overworking a job to pay the rent, recording a movie inside the cinema, being crushed down at a concert or reading Playboy at school are simple facts but they inevitably impact on an adolescent’s growth and future memory.
