Jana Schröder – Lory

Biography

Born in 1983 in Brilon, Jana Schröder lives and works in Düsseldorf. Schröder studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under the Professor Albert Oehlen. Jana Schröder’s large-scale works are the result of a gestural and graphic impulsive practice, moved by a tension between conscious and coincidental. Her artistic practice seeks to question the validity of traditional painting gestures. The compositions are multi-layered surfaces of lines, signs and curls generated by the frantic and repeated erasement and addition of paint as part of the process. The materiality of the paint and the slow-move gestures of the marks are revealed only at a closer look. Schröder’s work is a meditation on process and repetition. The artist often rejects the need to represent an intellectual meaning in order to derive a concept, modeling her ideas through an interplay of overlapping colors and layers of paint. She uses oil paints to slowly transition initials, signatures and abbreviations onto large-scale canvases, and by doing so, she manages to isolate and highlight their sheer form. On monochrome bases, elaborate pictorial gestures unfold from surfaces, lines and their respective forms in a complexity that is the result of an intuitive arrangement of pictorial layers. In some other paintings, the artist uses the indelible pencil which attributes a chromatic evolution during the drying process of the pieces. With its overwhelming chemical nature, it irrevocably fades away when exposed to sunlight. The pencil’s signs serve then as the perfect platform for expressing gestures freely and as a finalizing act.
