Biography

Trey Abdella was born in 1994 in Manassas, Virginia and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He earned his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2016 and his MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2019. His artistic production has received international recognition, with recent solo exhibitions at Vito Schnabel Gallery and David Lewis Gallery, both in New York (2023); the X Museum in Beijing, China (2022); and T293 in Rome, Italy (2021; 2019). Selected group exhibitions include Vito Schnabel Gallery & Sotheby's in Los Angeles, CA (2022); Anat Ebgi in Los Angeles, CA (2021); and Nino Mier in Los Angeles, CA (2020). The artist is known for his approach that blends painting, sculpture, and assemblage. A skilled storyteller, Abdella cultivates a fascinating nostalgia in his works, drawing from the trivialities of life and common aspects, electrifying them with a heightened sense of drama and terror. His bold, large-scale works, explicit in illustration and vividly colored, tell a story about the dangers and miseries encountered along the path of the American dream, illustrating its horror and melancholy. Trey Abdella creates hyperrealistic works in mixed media with acrylic, resin, fiberglass, and other materials, incorporating a variety of found objects such as wigs, magic balls, fake flowers, 3D holographic fans, and Christmas decorations, playing with the illusionistic depth of his scenes.

Trey Abdella – In The Neighborhood

Studio Visit

From his studio in New York, Trey Abdella talks about his second solo exhibition at T293. 'In The Neighborhood' is conceived by the artist as a journey through his childhood and coming of age experiences. The works portray mundane but nonetheless memorable situations that Abdella has lived while growing up in the suburbs of West Virginia. Overworking a job to pay the rent, recording a movie inside the cinema, being crushed down at a concert or reading Playboy at school are simple facts but they inevitably impact on an adolescent’s growth and future memory.
