Biography

Born in 1970 in Mexico City, Martin Soto Climent lives and works in Tepoztlán, Mexico. Martin Soto Climent mainly with sculptures and installations to which he mostly uses simple objects and materials he finds in the streets or buys at thrift stores. Sometimes unaltered, sometimes subject to minimal gestures of recontextualization, these materials are arranged in new configurations that in their simplicity and humbleness may appear like readymades. The artist is not interested in art as a product but believes in the artistic object as a container of energy. His process is based on the intensification of this energy through the use of minimal resources according to a method of economy of means that extends to an existential logic of restraint and moderation, a conscious posture to counteract excess. Soto Climent is constantly looking for the poetic gesture that transforms, without producing, what is already in the world to demonstrate how a simple fold, intertwining or extension of one or more objects can open multiple 'windows' of perception and understanding and evoke intimate memories and suggestions. Materials like women's clothing, domestic furnishings and vintage photographies are manipulated and transformed drawing out the sexual or otherwise implicit qualities of the objects that are arranged in apparently fragile assemblages that explore questions of desire, fragility, temporality and decay. Most of these objects can be returned to their original state and therefore stay in an ephemeral stage of transition.
