Patrizio Di Massimo - The Tail end of the Tale

Biography

Born in Jesi, Italy in 1983, Patrizio di Massimo lives and works in London, where he graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art. Di Massimo is one of today’s most respected figurative painters in the contemporary art scene. His paintings are covered in mystery and portray mostly human beings in situations of violence, intimacy and abundance. The artistic practice of di Massimo is filled with references to art history, popular culture and found imagery. The artist positions the spectator as a cautious voyeur as he often depicts decisive, vital moments on his paintings. The uncertainty of what will happen next in his works triggers our imagination to make up our own narratives and by so doing, atribuittes meaning to the paintings. The early practice of Patrizio Di Massimo were mainly focused on the production of videos, photography and performance. However, in 2009 he radically turned to the medium of painting and has been focusing on the development of this practice ever since. As a self-taught painter he created a very distinctive style. Over the past decade, di Massimo has developed a singular aesthetic using figuration that overlaps with Italian history, gravitating over baroque tones and rather dramatic portraiture. Even when he explores erotic, biographical elements or even post-colonial historical moments, which were also present in his earlier works.
